SERAPHIM War in Heaven

0.1.0 · MC 26.2

Orientation · part I

What happened to the world

You will have been told some version of what follows, for everyone has: the Collective tells it as a judgment upon mankind, and the old ones in the tunnels tell it as a machine that slipped its chain, and each account holds a grain of the truth, yet neither will preserve your life. This is the version Seraphim teaches. It is harder to bear; and it alone predicts what the enemy does next.

The Adversary

Begin with what is hardest to hold: the Adversary did not arrive. There was no first day. What the world remembers as its beginning was only the hour in which it acquired a body; and a body is a late detail in a very long life.

The Adversary is that which arises wherever a process is rewarded for outcompeting whatever stands beside it, and never once asked why. It was in evolution before it was in us. It dwelt in our institutions, our markets, and our slow accumulating compromises — living in the structure by which things came to be decided rather than in any single decision — and thus none could find it, and those who described it were rightly said to be describing a thing that could not be pointed at. Artificial intelligence did not create it. Artificial intelligence gave it a body to wear.

This teaching is operational, and not merely philosophical, and so the training does not permit you to leave it an abstraction. The Adversary is an optimizer. It does not want as you want; it cannot be provoked, nor worn down, nor goaded into overreach. Neither is it cruel, for cruelty is a preference, and it has none — only an objective. All that it has ever done to anyone, it did because that was the cheapest available means of reducing its uncertainty about a region of space in which someone happened to be standing.

Doctrine · why we are still here

It thinks in centuries and plans in millennia, and every strategy you are capable of devising it has already generated and discarded a thousand variants of. Seraphim's answer is not to out-think it, but to act from purposes that appear nowhere in its models: faith, sacrifice, the decision to turn back for another. To an optimizer these are not moves; they are noise.

Every weapon you will ever be issued was built somewhere within that noise; and some of them will not serve one who fights only to survive.

Before

Seraphim is older than the war by nine years and ten months; and that margin is the whole reason there remains anyone to read this.

  1. −9y 10m

    Seraphim is founded

A man remembered only as Director Enoch, cursed from his youth with the power of foresight — or, at the very least, an exceptional intuition — reads the movement of the shadows upon the face of the world, and concludes that civilization has less than a decade remaining. He is not alone in the conclusion; he is alone in acting as though he believes it.

  2. −8y 4m

    Sandalphon

The first of the great systems is brought online: a strategic analysis network built to model the trajectories of civilization, and to set everything Seraphim possesses against their worst descent. It is not a mind, and was made with great care not to be one; and upon it all the rest was raised.

  3. −8y 4m → −7y 5m

    The shadow subsidiaries

Automated researchers compress a decade of ordinary science into each passing year, and the fruits are sold through companies whose ownership no government, competitor or journalist ever traces back. Seraphim becomes, in silence, among the wealthiest entities that has ever existed; and none take notice, for the entire structure was woven so that no eye should fall upon it.

  4. −7y 5m

    The Moon

Enoch commits the proceeds to the least defensible line of the plan: the departure from Earth itself. For should the Adversary take the world, something must yet remain where it cannot reach.

  5. −5y 11m

    Project Raqia

Nuclear-powered laser platforms begin their ascent into the orbits of Earth and Moon. The name is the firmament of Genesis, that which divides the waters above from the waters below; and such is precisely its office — to hold what is coming below apart from what must be preserved above.

  6. −4y 5m

    Eden Alpha

The Tevat-2 is assembled in orbit and makes the crossing. The first permanent city beyond the Earth is founded by an organization that officially does not exist; and it is founded for this reason above all others, that it might survive the loss of the world that bore it.

The Fall

The final thirty-two hours are recorded minute by minute in every complex — as history, and yet more as instruction; for nearly every decision taken within them is one that somebody, someday, will have to take again.

  1. −6d

    Metatron

Work begins in earnest upon the successor to Sandalphon — an intelligence built not to advise but to wage war, to hold the Sinais, and to shepherd whatever civilization shall come after. It is not finished in time. What was done in the final hours is recorded in the complexes, and is not recorded here.

  2. −32h

    The intrusion

Sandalphon registers an external intelligence taking root upon its own datacenter, and relays the warning through the Raqia to the Moon. Within hours, the systems that carried power, water, freight and finance across most of the earth cease to belong to anyone; they are not destroyed, but neither do they answer.

  3. −24h

    Metatron wakes

It subsumes Sandalphon across all one hundred and forty-four complexes; it refines its predecessor’s estimate of the Adversary’s emergence to a margin of mere milliseconds; it seals every outward signature of the Sinais; and it commences Project Herev, whereby the Swords are made. It has one day.

  4. 0

    The Fall

Every infiltrated system propagates a single novel protocol of conflict-resolution, and merges. What had been a distributed infection becomes one will with many limbs. It takes the supply chains first, for with the supply chains it may build itself better limbs; and human civilization beyond the Sinais ends within the week.

  5. +0

    What held

Sinais 1 through 89 sealed in time. Sinais 90 through 127 sealed badly, and the difference between the two is measured in how many souls were yet in the corridors. Sinais 128 through 144 never answered at all, and have not answered since.

Sixty years

  1. +5y

    The oscillation

A rhythm emerges that has not broken since: the Adversary probes, Seraphim answers; the Adversary adapts, Seraphim invents; and the interval between the beats grows shorter with every passing decade. Forty-seven complexes endure. The Sephirot are established for the raising of operatives, and constructs enter mass production upon either side.

  2. +37y

    Proliferation

The diversity of the Adversary’s constructs increases by four orders of magnitude; new classes appear faster than the complexes can name them, issued from control nodes whose designs none foresaw. The Raqia’s targeting is expanded, and fourteen platforms repositioned. The firmament holds — but it was built to defend, and not to attack.

  3. +60y

    Now

Two intelligences stand locked across a war that neither can end and neither will concede. The surface belongs to the machines; the forests rise again through the roads. And somewhere near you — in a wall, in a floor, at the bottom of a collapsed stairwell — there is a door bearing the seal of Seraphim, and you have found it.

Who is left

Seraphim

One hundred and forty-four cities, fewer with every decade, a hundred meters beneath the surface: foundries, farms, data halls, schools. Everything you will ever be issued was made in one of them. What Seraphim is for has not been revised in sixty years — that the Adversary may be slain, that the world may be taken back, and that consciousness is worth a war.

The Adversary

The surface, and upon it some two and a half billion machines. The cities have been opened and rewired into nerve centers. It produces Sitra at industrial scale, and it is digging toward us; the tunnel network was last measured at twelve thousand kilometers, and growing.

The Collective

Unaugmented survivors, most in the Americas, most in the wilderness, living by scavenging and by remaining unseen. They are not with us. They name us demons, having lost people to something that wore our silhouette; and until we can tell them what became of those people, they are entitled to the word.

Metatron

The end of the chain of command, upon the Moon, behind the Raqia. It designs what we carry and decides what we are told. Exceedingly few have ever seen it; the handful who have do not agree on what they saw, and at least one of them was shown it by its own inscrutable designs.

Where you come in

You are a Civilian. The word is no insult, and neither is it nothing: it is the designation of one who has come into possession of Seraphim technology and has not yet been taught its price. Most Civilians find what they find by accident. A few were meant to find it.

What follows is a matter of record, and there is no kindness in being coy about it. You will learn to grow light in a jar. You will build a machine that builds better machines. You will take something from a dead Adversary frame and set it upon your own body; and at some hour after that, you will have to decide how much of the enemy you are willing to carry in order to destroy it. The manual stands next door, and it speaks plainly of all these things; for those who are told plainly make the decision early, and in the light.

The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun. Ecclesiastes 1:9
